Fast and Feared, with Offensive and Defensive Powers
This ship needed an advanced weapons system
by Warren W.
As the on-site
engineer for RCA (subsequently GE, Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin) in New
York, I witnessed the development and Aegis Combat System design implementation
for the Arleigh Burke (DDG-51). With the cooperation of Lockheed Martin, Bath
Iron Works and Gibbs & Cox, the DDG-51 design proceeded without any real showstoppers.
Through collaboration of all involved, cost savings were accomplished during
the Aegis Combat Systems preliminary and contract design. The personnel
involved with the DDG-51 design and the Aegis Combat Systems implementation can
be very pleased with the very successful and powerful Navy destroyer.
