A New Model for Housing Manufacture
Martin Marietta helped change
the building and construction industry
by Gregory G.
In
1969, President Lyndon Johnson issued RFPs for "Operation Breakthrough:
Low-Cost Housing" solutions. Martin Marietta, through its cement and lime
division, had already demonstrated substantial investment in lightweight
cellular concrete as the essential structural component of such housing
systems. As Martin Marietta's Director of Low-Cost Housing, I was privileged to
blend the integration of our corporation’s diverse technologies with those of a
consortium comprised of Martin Marietta; Precast Systems, Inc.; United States Gypsum Corporation;
C.F. Murphy Associates (architects and engineers); and Lennox Industries, Inc.
As a finalist in this
competition, essential elements of our proposal would become prime facets of the
Department of Housing and Urban Development’s subsequent low-cost housing programs.
